Central American Studies Press

Director: Katy Maldonado Dominguez

Central American Studies Press engages field formation, particularly abolitionist dialogues, in a conversation about theoretical frameworks and political aspirations in Central American Studies.

Key questions for consideration include: How might centering abolition as a disciplinary goal transform the field of Central American Studies? What perspectives and insights does a Central American Studies lens bring to abolitionist aspirations? How can abolition shape the relationships the field has to the university and Central American community?

In its broadest form, Central American Studies is an emerging interdisciplinary field with the primary goal of examining the complex diasporic and transnational formations of Central Americans in the United States and the isthmus. As the field continues to grow and establish its significance in scholarly conversations about diaspora, migration, ethnicity, race, memory, war, and imperialism, it is crucial for emerging Central American Studies scholars to define what the field means to them. The Press aims to provide a collective space from which to complicate current intellectual trajectories as well as engage future directions through an abolitionist lens, one that may help identify and address entangled modes of dispossession across populations and regions within and outside the scope of Central America.
